Parents: "Our family name was Van Wickle and not Winkle. Originally the first ancestor in America came from the village of Wiclen in Hollard. " I recall that Grandma Lyman was very careful to explain that she was Catherine Van Wickle. As were all the family connections around Lyons. They once owned large tracts of land about there. There is a well preserved house in Geneseo near here that was built by Evert Van Wickle, father of Simon Van Wickle, 1st husband of Catherine. I once asked our grandmother how she came to marry 3 times and she said, "I married Mr. Van Wickle because my father wanted me to. I married Mr. Van Voorhies because I wanted to, and I married Mr. Lyman because he wanted me to." [She never called her husbands by their first names.] -courtesy of Catherine Stanton Richert, 2006 [It appears that Lillian was in error about a few of these details. The family appears to have come via Jentie Jeppes from Wickel, Friesland. The house built by Evert is still standing in Angelica, NY. Evert's father was Nicasius^4. His grandfather was Simon^3 Van Wickle and Simon's home erected in 1722 in NJ is still standing as well.

Adele's mother was Mary Ashley Van Voorhis Townsend and Mary Ashley's parents were Catherine Van Wickle and James Van Voorhies. 10 May 2006 email from Catherine
Stanton Richert who is working on a project she calls the Campbell letters.
Lillian Lyman Campbell was one of Catherine Van Wickle's
grandchildren, and in the late 1950s at the end of her life she corresponded
with her cousin Gideon T. Stanton, my grandfather, remembering and sharing
family stories. One of Catherine's research paths took her
to Lyons, NY in June 2003. "Ever since I was a little girl, I'd heard the
story of Catherine Van Wickle and her three husbands. I found her home there in
town, the place nearby in the country where her daughter, my
great-great-grandmother, Mary Ashley Van Voorhis Townsend was born...and
finally...with the help of my doggedly determined husband, Catherine's grave,
where she rests with all three of the husbands she survived."
In Fall, 2006 I received from Catherine Stanton Richert
her compilation dated 5 June 2006 and titled "My Dear Gideon" Catherine
Richert's compilation confirms and informs much of the information on this and
other family pages and adds a richness of personal information on the family and
friends of Catherine Van Wickle. |
